Winter is Making a Comeback! Top 5 Places for Fun Around Fort Collins
Although recent warm days here on the Front Range may try to convince us otherwise, winter isn't over, folks.....which is a good thing!
Fort Collins and surrounding areas have so much to offer in winter fun! So before spring weather replaces the snow with blooms, buds, and Bambi, grab your down jacket & your mittens and come see why Colo(rad)o is radical all year long! We've compiled some of our favorite places for winter activities so you don't have to. The more snow, the more options open up for these delightful, heart pumping expeditions, but there are some spots almost guaranteed to always have enough snow to keep a snowman smiling. Don't fret if you don't own your own equipment, rentals are easily and affordably available.
Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) is an all encompassing good time, and has lots of options for more novice outdoor adventurers. RMNP has sledding, winter hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing (with option to hike with a ranger), and wildlife watching.
Cameron Pass and surrounding areas are perfect for both novices and the bolder, more thrill-seeking types, offering deep, pristine snow and the ability to venture in near solitude as well as a beautiful drive up our cherished Poudre Canyon. If you have a need for speed, snowmobiling opportunities are also available in this area. Our above photo was taken on Michigan Ditch up Cameron Pass.
Beaver Meadows Resort Ranch in Red Feather Lakes is a lovely hour's drive northwest and provides all above mentioned activities as well as sleigh rides, ice fishing, ice skating, horseback rides, and a snow tubing hill which takes you back up to the top! No more struggling, just pure enjoyment!
Our northern neighbor, Laramie, WY, is only an hour's drive and nearby are Snowy Range Mountains and Medicine Bow National Forest . They also offer all outings listed above and most likely a cowboy sighting or two.
And last, but definitely not least, our beloved town of Fort Collins. Consistent snow and ice are harder to come by here but when it does, we have our own in-town outdoor skating and ice fishing at Sheldon Lake in City Park, a mere 4 blocks east of the Fernweh! Visit Fort Collins has all the info you need to get your winter on (weather permitting) while still being so close to the warmth of the Fernweh.
